Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Yankees – Full Game Highlights | April 2, 2025 MLB Season
The Arizona Diamondbacks edged out the New York Yankees 4-3 in a thrilling contest at Yankee Stadium. The game was a pitching masterclass from Zac Gallen, who dominated the Yankees’ lineup for most of the night, while New York’s late rally in the ninth inning fell just short.
Game Summary
First Inning:
The Diamondbacks wasted no time getting on the board. After a leadoff single from Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. launched a two-run homer to deep left field off Yankees’ starting pitcher Carlos Rodón, giving Arizona an early 2-0 lead.
The Yankees, on the other hand, struggled to respond in the bottom of the inning. Gallen, Arizona’s ace, retired the side in order, including a strikeout of Aaron Judge.
Second Inning:
Arizona kept the pressure on. Ketel Marte doubled to left-center and later scored on a single by Christian Walker. Following another base hit from Eugenio Suárez, the D-backs tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly from Gabriel Moreno, extending their lead to 4-0.
The Yankees attempted to answer back in their half of the inning with a single from Cody Bellinger and a walk to Giancarlo Stanton, but Gallen struck out Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu to escape unscathed.
Middle Innings (3rd – 6th):
From the third inning onward, both starting pitchers settled in. Rodón bounced back after his rocky start, pitching four scoreless frames and striking out seven batters. However, the Yankees’ offense remained quiet against Gallen, who was in peak form.
Gallen’s fastball and curveball mix kept the Yankees off balance, and he struck out a career-high 13 batters through 6 2/3 innings. He allowed only three hits and walked two, completely shutting down one of baseball’s most dangerous lineups.
Seventh & Eighth Inning:
The Diamondbacks turned to their bullpen after Gallen reached 105 pitches. Joe Mantiply took over and recorded the final out of the seventh. In the eighth, Kevin Ginkel came in and worked a clean inning, setting the stage for the ninth.
Meanwhile, the Yankees’ bullpen also kept Arizona from adding any more runs. Jonathan Loáisiga and Clay Holmes combined for three scoreless innings to give New York a chance at a comeback.
Ninth Inning – Yankees’ Comeback Attempt:
With Arizona still leading 4-0, closer A.J. Puk came in to finish the job. But the Yankees didn’t go down without a fight.
- Cody Bellinger led off with a walk.
- Aaron Judge followed with a single to left field, putting two runners on.
- With one out, Anthony Volpe stepped up and crushed a three-run homer over the left-field fence, electrifying the Yankee Stadium crowd and cutting the lead to 4-3.
With the game suddenly in reach, the Yankees had momentum, but Puk recovered quickly, striking out DJ LeMahieu and forcing Oswaldo Cabrera into a game-ending groundout.
Final Score: Diamondbacks 4, Yankees 3
